How To: Enable the Hidden Number Row in Google Keyboard on Your Android

How To: Enable the Hidden Number Row in Google Keyboard on Your Android
If you utilize strong passwords—which you absolutely should be—you've probably had to go back and forth between keyboard screens multiple times to input various letters, numbers, and symbols. The Google Keyboard does have numbers easily accessible via a long-press in the top row of letters, but if you're using a lot of numbers frequently, those half-second delays can become annoying. Plus, you still need to switch screens for special characters. Having a dedicated number row on the keyboard would help make typing not only passwords, but other things like addresses, Wi-Fi logins, etc. more seamless.Recently, we showed you how to install a modded version of the Google Keyboard that included a number row, and while this did provide a solution, it's not necessary, and it wouldn't even work on Nexus devices anyway. However, there is an easier way to get a number row layout—with more symbol options—and it's hiding in the official Google Keyboard app. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Locate Your Settings & PreferencesIf you're using a non-Nexus device, your keyboard settings can easily be accessed by locating the Google Keyboard application in your app drawer. For Nexus users, navigate to Settings -> Language & input -> Google Keyboard.

Step 2: Set Up the New LayoutOnce you're in the keyboard's settings, select Appearance & layouts -> Custom input styles. Next, tap the addition sign, select your language, then choose "PC" for the layout and tap "Add."

Step 3: Enable the Custom LayoutAfter tapping "Add," select "Enable" on the proceeding popup and you're almost done. The next thing to do is ensure that the new PC layout is actually toggled on, so toggle off "Use system language" and make sure your language version of "English (PC)" is on. Once you've set up your layout and enabled it, all that's left to do is to start using it. The keyboard will look slightly different, much like a computer keyboard, but the important thing is that those numbers keys are now easier to type. Before: the regular U.S. layout with very few symbols and hold options for numbers. After: the PC layout with a dedicated number row and more symbol options. Note that with this format, you can long-press a number to input the symbol associated with it, but it's only on the tablet layout that you'll actually see the symbol, whereas the phone layout doesn't show what is associated with each digit. This is what the PC layout looks like on a Samsung Galaxy S4 phone (no symbols visible).
How to Remove the Custom LayoutBe aware that the PC layout will tweak your keyboard a little bit. If you don't like it too much after using it, it's simple to revert back. All you have to do is head back into the "Custom input styles" screen, select the new layout, and tap Remove."

How To: Get Apple's Live Fish Wallpapers Back on Your iPhone

How To: Get Apple's Live Fish Wallpapers Back on Your iPhone
Remember the live fish wallpapers from iOS 9? They may be a fading memory at this point since Apple removed them all from the iPhone in iOS 11, but there is a way to get those fishies animated on your device again. They'll be live photos for your lock screen, which is as good as it will get until Apple lets us use all its live wallpapers, new and old, one day, which will probably never happen. While these are the original video files we'll be using for the fish animations, they won't act exactly like Apple's stock live wallpapers when we're done.Apple's default live wallpapers not only animate when you use 3D Touch on the display, but they move faster or slower depending on how much force you apply. When you lift your finger off the screen, the animation reverses back to the first frame. The only way to simulate this right now is by using a jailbreak tweak, and there is no public jailbreak for iOS 12 yet, though there is one for iOS 11.So our version of these fishy live wallpapers will act just like normal live photos that you turn into live wallpapers on your iPhone. They will animate when you use 3D Touch, but they will stop playing when they reach the end of the video, and they won't reverse back to the first frame.

Step 1: Download the Fishy FilesThere are six live fish wallpapers that Apple removed starting in iOS 11, and all of them are linked individually below as .m4v video files. However, there's no simple way to download individual video files on your iPhone, so we recommend to just download them all in a .zip file. If you choose the .zip file, you'll want to choose "More" in Safari, then "Save to Files." Then you can select "Preview Content" when viewing the .zip in the Files app, and use the share sheet to save each video to your Photos app.Orange Fish on White Background Light Blue Fish on White Background Blue/Orange Fish on White Background Blue/Yellow Fish on Black Background Blue/White Fish on Black Background Blue/Red Fish on Black Background

Step 2: Install a Video-to-Live-Photo ConverterIn order to turn the .m4v video files into live photos, we'll need to use a conversion app. There are some good paid ones in the iOS App Store, but free is always better. Paid options include Live Maker (subscription), Live Studio ($0.99), and intoLive Pro ($2.99). There are also a few free trial ones like LiveMaker Free which only lets you convert five videos before paying and haven't been updated in a long time.In our case, it's best to use intoLive, the free version. There are some limitations, but not for what we need. Plus, it was recently updated to work with iOS 12.App Store Link: intoLive - Live Wallpapers (free)

Step 3: Convert the Videos to Live PhotosOpen up the intoLive app (you will have to grant it access to your Photos library), make sure the "Video" tab is selected, then choose the fish video file you want to convert. On the edit screen, just tap the "Make" button in the top right. Next, choose "No repeat" on the popup unless you want to pay to repeat the animation twice, three times, or five times. After you've made your choice, tap "Save Live Photos" on the next screen and it will be saved to your Photos app as a live photo. You will have to watch an ad or two, but it's worth it for the price of free.Don't Miss: How to Turn GIFs into Live Photos on Your iPhone

Step 4: Set as Your Live WallpaperYou can set your new live fish photo as your wallpaper. Go to "Wallpaper" in the Settings app, select "Choose a New Wallpaper," then choose your live photo. In this guide, however, I'll show you how to do it straight from the Photos app, so go ahead and open that up.Open up the live photo, then tap the share sheet icon in the bottom left. On the bottom row of options, tap the "Use as Wallpaper" option, then tap "Set." On the prompt, select "Set Lock Screen," and you're done. It would be nice if Apple kept all its previous wallpapers and just added to them in new iOS updates, but for some reason, Apple feels the need to completely remove older ones to highlight fresher backgrounds associated with new iPhones. Too bad.Don't Miss: 100+ Coolest New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know AboutFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

If you have "Automatic Updates" enabled, you can skip the manual update and just wait until iOS installs the update automatically. Here are the main fixes in Apple's release notes:Fixes an issue in Messages that could impact scrolling through photos in the Details view Addresses an issue where photos could have striped artifacts after being sent from the Share Sheet Fixes an issue that may cause audio distortion when using external audio input devices on iPad Pro (2018) Resolves an issue that could cause certain CarPlay systems to disconnect from iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS MaxThere's also a few fixes for those of you who own HomePods:Fixes an issue that could cause HomePod to restart Addresses an issue that could cause Siri to stop listeningAs for security issues, Apple has patched 22 issues with iOS and its own apps, including fixes for Bluetooth, FaceTime, Keyboard, Safari, and WebKit vulnerabilities. How To: Make ADB & Fastboot Work in Any Folder on Windows

How To: Make ADB & Fastboot Work in Any Folder on Windows
Unless you're experienced using the Linux terminal, running ADB and Fastboot commands can get confusing very fast. The problems often stem from having to hunt for various files — usually IMG or ZIP files that you need to mod your Android phone — and then move them to your platform-tools folder, which, depending on how you installed ADB in the first place, could be anywhere. The platform-tools folder is significant because it houses a pair of files (adb.exe and fastboot.exe) that the Windows command prompt needs to reference before it can send any ADB or Fastboot commands. But if you're sending any files or mods over to your Android device, the Windows command prompt also needs those to be in the same folder, unless you're willing to type out the full file location. So until now, the easiest way to install mods with ADB or Fastboot was to move necessary files into the platform-tools folder, then open a command window in the same folder. That way, the mod files, plus the adb.exe and fastboot.exe files, would be in the same place, giving the Windows command prompt everything it needs.Thankfully, there's now a way to bake ADB and Fastboot into the Windows command prompt itself, which lets you immediately run ADB upon opening the command prompt. With this enabled, you won't have to worry about file locations. Instead, just open up a command window in the same folder your mod files are located, and you'll be able to run ADB and Fastboot with a set of simple commands.Don't Miss: Know Your Android Tools: What is ADB & How Do You Use It?
Step 1: Download the Standalone Platform-Tools PackageBefore we get started, you'll need to download Google's new standalone platform-tools package in order to mesh it into the Windows command prompt. This standalone version doesn't come bundled with the full Android Studio, so it's easier to install. Feel free to head to our full guide for more information on the standalone platform-tools package, but otherwise, you can grab the ZIP from the following link:Download the standalone platform-tools package from Google (.zip)

Step 2: Extract to a FolderOnce you have the platform-tools ZIP downloaded, you'll need to extract it to a folder that's easy to locate. As such, we'd recommend creating a folder named Android in the root of the C:\ drive (C:\Android\), then extracting the files there. This will make it easy to remember and locate, as we'll need to revisit it later on.

Step 3: Change Domain Settings in Control PanelAfter extracting the ADB and Fastboot files to the C:\Android folder you just created, go to the Control Panel on your PC, select "System and Security," then click on "System." Next, select "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings" and click on the "Change settings" link located on the right side. A new window will now pop up, and it's on to the next step.

Step 4: Edit Path in Environmental VariablesSelect the Advanced tab on the new window, then click "Environment Variables" on the bottom-right side and another window will appear. Go to the new window and locate System Variables section on the lower half of the popup, then double click the "Path" entry.

Step 5: Create a New Path for ADB & FastbootWhile in this window, click on "New." Now, you'll need to input the location of the extracted platform-tools folder, so type in the following path and hit enter:C:\Android\platform-tools\It will now appear as a new entry located at the bottom of the list. Click "Okay" on all three windows when you're finished, then restart your computer.

Step 6: Open a Command Window & TestAfter your computer fully boots up, hold down the shift button on your keyboard, then right-click any empty space in any folder (even on your desktop) and select "Open command window here" to open up a command terminal. From here, enter "adb start-server" into the prompt (without the quotes), and if everything went off without a hitch, you'll see a message saying "daemon started successfully." Alternatively, you can also test for this new feature by pressing the Windows key and typing "cmd" into the search bar. Type "fastboot" in the command line once it opens up, and you'll be greeted with a slew of available Fastboot commands. From now on, whenever you need to flash an IMG file with Fastboot or push and pull files with ADB, you'll simply need to open the command window in the same folder as the target files using the shift/right-click trick. In other words, with this mod set up, you are now free to mod your Android phone to your heart's content!Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: The Easiest Way to Record Video of Your Nexus 5's Screen

How To: The Easiest Way to Record Video of Your Nexus 5's Screen
Not too long ago, we told you about a new feature within Android KitKat that allowed for video recording directly from the screen of your Nexus 5. Though functional, the method was a bit clunky and involved hooking your phone up to your computer and sending over an ADB command to start the recording.I gathered it wouldn't be long before the dev community figured out a better way, and that day has come. Now there's a dead simple method to screen record—without having to mess with any USB cables or command windows. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Root Your Nexus 5Advanced apps and mods like this one usually require that we're rooted. If you haven't yet taken the plunge, we've got your back with an easy root method for the Nexus 5 that does all the hard work for you.

Step 2: Install Rec. (Screen Recorder)There are more than a few apps in the Google Play Store that claim to enable screen recording, but I find none of them work with the consistency or ease of Rec. (Screen Recorder) from SPECTRL. It simply works, and it works well—every single time.

Step 3: Set Up a RecordingRec. is elegant in its simplicity. Open the app and all you have to worry about is setting the bit rate, duration, toggling audio from your device, and naming the file—the settings are laid out for you, nice and neat, on the launch screen. In the basic version of this app, you can only record up to 5 minutes as time, but that's plenty if you ask me, unless you're recording your Candy Crush skills. Also, it only records audio from the microphone—not device audio—and is limited to just 30 seconds. If you're just recording a quick walkthrough on your device, you probably won't need audio anyway.Tap Record when you're ready. You'll have to grant superuser access to the app, then you'll get a ten-second countdown timer. You'll now have a persistent notification in your dropdown bar that conveniently displays the time remaining on your recording. Tap the notification to stop the recording.
Getting More from Your RecordingsAs mentioned before, there's a paid version (available as an in-app purchase) that throws you some more features, like longer recording times (up to an hour), audio recording via the mic, and the ability to preset the countdown timer. It may be worth your $3.29 if you like what you see.If you so choose, you can upgrade by navigating to the settings menu in Rec. from the overflow icon in the top right. You'll find Rec. Pro as an option under support; just tap there to upgrade. The great thing about Android is not just finding new ways to push the envelope, but figuring out ways to make current things better. The app Rec. just so happens to be one of the latest examples of the latter.

Safe mode disables all third-party applications, so if bugs or other issues disappear while in this mode, you'll know definitively that one of the apps you've installed is the culprit. YouTube 101: How to Make a Playlist from Your Phone

YouTube 101: How to Make a Playlist from Your Phone

YouTube is a giant platform — over 300 hours of video are uploaded every minute. It can be difficult to keep track of your favorite videos in such a chaotic sea of content. Difficult, but certainly not impossible.Let's say you want to start a collection of the funniest videos you've ever seen. Or, maybe you want to organize a group of educational videos together as a study guide of sorts. Whatever the reason, if you need to group videos together on YouTube, there's a solution: Playlists.Playlists are easy to create. To start, just find a video that interests you, then tap the three-dot menu button next to the video's title. Or, if you're already viewing the video that you'd like to add to a playlist, tap the "Add to" button just beneath the video's title. The three-dot menu button (left) and the "Add to" button (right). After tapping either the three-dot menu button or the "Add to" button, choose "Add to Playlist." If you've never made a playlist before (that's probably the case since you're viewing this guide, right?), you will have two options — "Create new playlist" or "Watch later." Android (left) vs. iPhone (right). Watch Later is a playlist that comes built into every YouTube account. It's a fast and easy way to save videos that you don't have time to watch now. It even has its own selection in the aforementioned options menu, saving you a step.Don't Miss: How to Block YouTube Ads & Enable Background Playback on Your iPhone—No Jailbreak NeededTo make your own playlist, however, select "Create new playlist." Now, the Android and iOS apps differ slightly after this point. Both immediately let you name the new playlist, but iOS gives you three privacy options — Public, which means this playlist will be viewable by anyone on YouTube; Unlisted, which means only users with the link to the playlist can view it; or Private, which means only users you have given permission to can view the playlist. On Android, the playlist will be public by default, and you will only have the option to change the playlist to private. Android (left) vs. iPhone (right). So give your new playlist a name, then tap "OK" on Android or hit the check mark on iOS. In the future, if you'd like to add more videos to this same playlist, just tap the three-dot menu button or the "Add to" button like you did before, but this time, choose "Playlist," then pick the playlist you just created. Then, to view your new playlist, tap "Library" in the bottom-right corner of the app's main menu. Your playlists will be listed at the bottom of this page, with a default "Liked videos" playlist always at the top.If you open your playlist, you'll see some options represented as icons across the top of the screen. You can shuffle play the playlist, share it, and delete it. You can also edit the name, description, privacy settings, and add users to collaborate. Then, the bell icon lets you set an alert on the playlist so that every time a new video is added, YouTube will notify you. This feature works better for playlists you follow, however, since you don't need a notification every time you add a video yourself. Android (left) vs. iPhone (right). Now that you know your way around playlists, YouTube just turned into your own personalized TV station in a way. What was the first playlist you made on YouTube? How To: Unlock NSFW GIFs on the Gboard Keyboard for Android

How To: Unlock NSFW GIFs on the Gboard Keyboard for Android
After months of it being exclusive to iOS devices, Google made their popular Gboard app available for Android phones and tablets last December. It's a snappy keyboard with the power of Google search built right in, which allows you to search for and share images and GIFs right from your favorite messaging app.But much like the "Safe Search" feature in Google Images, Gboard's GIF-searching utility hides results that might not be safe for work. This is a fairly big disappointment, since most folks will use Gboard's image capabilities for sharing fun GIFs with their buddies, not their bosses. So developer ImADev stepped in with a new Xposed module that modifies Gboard in a way that gives you uncensored image search results for more adult-friendly sharing.Don't Miss: 12 Tips to Help You Master Gboard for Android
RequirementsXposed Framework installed "Unknown sources" enabled Gboard for Android installed

Step 1: Install NSFW GboardTo start, head to the Download section in your Xposed Installer app and search for NSFW Gboard, then tap the top result. From there, swipe over to the Versions tab, then hit "Download," and press "Install" when prompted. Once you're done there, don't forget to activate the module and reboot to finalize setup. Don't Miss: Speed Up Gboard Performance on Android by Disabling These Two Settings
Step 2: Get Uncensored GIF Search ResultsWhen you get back up, no further setup is needed. We're a PG-13 website, so I'm not going to post screenshots here, but suffice it to say that when you head to the Google Search tab in Gboard and look for a GIF, your search results will now be a bit more risque, depending on the query. And no, this is not just about being able to search for porn through your Android keyboard. It's more about getting the right search results when you need them, without Google's censorship stepping in to remove relevant results just because they might offend some people. One final thing to note is that this module is version-specific. That means that if the Gboard app gets an update, it could break the core functionality. If that happens, check back in the Download section in your Xposed Installer app and install any available updates to the NSFW Gboard module, then restart your device, and the functionality should come right back.Don't Miss: How to Add a Number Row to Google's Gboard KeyboardFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

A pen is mightier than the sword, but a picture is worth a thousand words. That's why I tend to use more emoji and GIFs than actual text in messages. They visualize my emotions like words could never do, and now more so than ever thanks to apps like iMoji, which lets you create custom emoji icons from photos. But what about custom GIFs? For that, there's Camoji. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
As intuitive and minimal as they come, when you first enter the Camoji app, you can begin creating your own GIF by simply holding down on the screen to record (an indicator will show up) and letting go to finish.Note: Swipe left or right on the screen to switch camera views. Once you're done recording your GIF, tap on it to add overlay text and emoji—Snapchat style. Then just tap Done when you're finished. After recording your GIF, swipe up on the screen to send it via text message. Your GIF will be placed in your Messages app, where you can then choose who to send it to. On any GIF that you've created, you can also swipe right to save or share it (via Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook), and you can swipe left to delete it. Simple and lightweight, Camoji is the perfect app for creating quick-reaction GIFs to send to friends through text. The only downside is its Camoji watermark, but for a free app, it's worth it, especially since it's not obtrusive. Grab Camoji - GIF Camera by Leo Me, Inc. from the iOS App Store for free, for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. And if you're not much for creating your own GIFs, you can find a premade one easily using Gifit, an iOS app that makes GIFs super easy to find and share.

And you don't have to be a computer programmer to understand how, either. You can disable notifications while your camera app is open, then re-enable them when the app is closed. We'll automate this process using an app called MacroDroid, which is a much more user-friendly alternative to Tasker.

Step 1: Install MacroDroidMacroDroid is free, and it doesn't require root. There is a lot less of a learning curve when compared with other automation apps like Tasker. Just hop on Google Play and search for it, or simply tap on our link below.Play Store Link: MacroDroid (free)

Step 2: Add a MacroThe MacroDroid home screen is pretty user-friendly. The "Templates" option gives you examples of projects other users have made. When we are done, you'll be able to access the macros you've created via the "Macros" button. For our purposes right now, we want to start by adding a macro. So tap the "Add Macro" tile on the main screen, then hit the + button in the bottom-right corner.

Step 3: Create a TriggerNow, select the "Applications" option. Choose "Application Launched/Closed," then specify that you want the "Application Launched" option. Check the box next to the Camera app, then confirm by pressing "OK." You'll notice a new pop-up window that says "Accessibility Required." Tap "OK". You'll be whisked away to the Accessibility Settings, where you can select MacroDroid. Tap the toggle to enable accessibility features for the MacroDroid app, then press your back button to head back to MacroDroid.

Step 4: Add an ActionRight next to the Triggers tab toward the top of your screen is a tab titled Actions. Tap on it, and the interface turns blue. Scroll down to choose "Volume," then select "Priority Mode/Do Not Disturb." If you do not already have Do Not Disturb mode enabled, you will be prompted to enable it now. You will be asked to specify which types of notifications you want Do Not Disturb mode to apply to. Make your selection and press "OK." Tap the green check mark to confirm you are done setting up the action. You will be asked to name your macro — any name will do here.

Step 5: Set Constraints to 'None'Moving to the right, next to the Actions tab is Constraints. Tap on it, and your interface will turn green. We want our macro to run the entire time the camera app is open, so select the "(No Constraints)" button. There are other various options below, however, if you would like to personalize.Confirm with the green check mark again. Don't be alarmed if it says the macro's not activated yet. After you launch the camera app, it will be.

Step 6: Add a Macro to Turn Notifications Back OnIf you don't want to be perpetually in Do Not Disturb mode the instant you launch your camera app, you'll want to make a second macro to apply when you close the camera app. Return to MacroDroid's home screen. Tap on the "Add Macro" option and hit the + button again.

Step 7: Create a TriggerWe are doing the first set of steps basically in reverse, so you'll still start by choosing the Applications tab. Then select "Application Launched/Closed." This time ,choose "Application Closed." Check the box next to the camera app again and hit "OK."

Step 8: Set Action to Turn Off 'Do Not Disturb'Now select the Actions tab once more. Find "Volume" at the bottom of list. Choose "Priority Mode / Do Not Disturb," but this time, select the "Allow All" option and hit "OK." Tap the green check mark and give this macro a name.

Step 9: Try It OutNow, open your Camera app. When you do, you should see an indicator in your status bar showing that Do Not Disturb mode is enabled. This means you won't have to worry about notifications interrupting your perfect shot or video again. But then, if you close the camera app, that status bar indicator should go away and notifications should resume. Even if you don't get any notifications when you launch your camera app this time, you can confirm that it will work by viewing your macros in MacroDroid. They should both be activated. Now you're done. Notifications are a good thing, but there's a time and place, and when you are trying to take a picture is not the time. Luckily, you can personalize your phone to work specifically how you want it to.Don't Miss: Boost Camera Resolution & Photo Quality on Your OnePlus 5 or 5T with 1 Simple ModFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

News: 10 Things Android Users Hate About iPhones

News: 10 Things Android Users Hate About iPhones
I'm an Android user. Over the course of the past seven years, I've owned ten different smartphones—all of them powered by Android. This isn't due to some blind trust in Google or some unfounded hate for Apple, either, because I've always made sure to get my hands on each iPhone iteration along the way to see what it had to offer. But just this last April, I finally got my very first iPhone. It's an iPhone 6, so it's not the latest and greatest, but it does run the most recent version of iOS. This has finally afforded me the chance to really compare the two operating systems, as opposed to my previous method of researching and copping five-minute sessions with in-store demo units.Don't Miss: 10 Ways iOS Beats AndroidI'll do my best to stay away from the obvious things like Siri vs. Google Now, the lack of custom launchers, and the locked down interface on iOS, since those issues have been covered ad nauseam. Instead, I'll take a closer look at some of the minor frustrations one encounters while using iOS, and all of the small things that Android does better than iOS.
Don't Miss: 23 Apps That Are Great for Both Android & iOS

#1 - Finicky Brightness & Volume SlidersMy first gripe with iOS is a minor one, but it's one of those little things that can grow to be infuriating the more you encounter it.With Android, when you want to adjust brightness or volume, you simply tap the slider at the point where you'd like it to be set, then the indicator jumps to meet your fingertip. iOS, on the other hand, actually forces you to drag the tiny indicator to the position you want, wasting precious seconds every time you adjust one of these primary functions.

#2 - Back Button IssuesI've read many accounts of users switching to Android after years of being tied down to iOS, and one standout that's easily agreed upon is that Android's back button is a godsend.Don't Miss:Become a Reachability Power-User on Your iPhoneiOS actually has a really nice feature that lets you swipe in from the left edge of your display to go back one screen in the app you're currently using. But the problem here is that it's up to app developers to implement this feature, and most don't.So the majority of times, you end up having to do thumb yoga to reach and tap the back button way up at the top of your screen, which gets old really fast, and has probably led to a lot of broken screens. There is the Reachability feature that helps with this somewhat, but that's more work than I'd like to do. (1) Jose Altuve uses Android. (2) Kawhi Leonard uses iOS.

#3 - Spotlight Search Is TerribleWith Android being created by Google, it was destined to always have a better search experience than other mobile operating systems. But the problem with iOS goes beyond the fact that Apple uses Bing as its default search provider in Spotlight Search (Google is sill the default in Safari), even though that was an obviously terrible decision.Spotlight Search, the all-inclusive search function on iOS, has its priorities out of whack. Any search you perform is cluttered with irrelevant suggestions from Siri, apps you've installed, apps you might want to install, and then way at the bottom, there's a link to just search the web—which then opens an entirely different app—using Safari to search Google. You can disable Siri suggestions and individual apps from appearing in Spotlight, but that's about it, and doesn't help clear up most of the mess.

#4 - You Can Toggle Settings, but You Can't Access Them EasilyThe Control Center on iOS is analogous to Android's Quick Settings menu in almost every way—it's where you go when you want to quickly toggle settings or adjust brightness, for instance. But on Android, when you want to dig a little deeper and perhaps connect to a different Wi-Fi network rather than just turning Wi-Fi off, you can expand these Quick Settings into mini-menus, or even access the entire Settings menu in one tap. With iOS, you have to head to your home screen, find the Settings app, then dig around to do anything aside from toggling these settings, which gets frustrating fast.

#5 - I Have No Idea What Kind of Phone I HaveMaybe this is more of a gripe with Apple than with iOS itself, but when the folks at our main office sent me this iPhone, I didn't know if it was an iPhone 5, 6, or 6s. So one of the first things I did was try to solve this mystery, obviously—but nowhere on the phone or in the "About" menu did it say exactly which iPhone I was holding in my hand. Sure, model numbers are present, but nothing states the common name.I admit that my situation here was a bit rare, but when you consider all of the used iPhones being sold on Craigslist and the like, it would be nice to have some sort of official confirmation in the software that you're actually getting what you're paying for, rather than the easily-altered print on the back of the device. Sure, I could Google the model number, but why should I have to?

#6 - You Can't Clear All App Data Without Jumping Through HoopsSometimes, apps act up. Their data becomes corrupt for one reason or another, which can lead to crashes or other bugs. When this happens with an Android app, you just head to the "App info" page and clear the app's data, which allows you to start fresh. Or, you simply uninstall the app, which removes all associated data, then try again after a reinstall. With iOS, you never truly "uninstall" an app—instead, what's actually happening is you're simply deleting the main package file and some app data. In many cases, a lot app data will be left behind, so even if you reinstall the app, you could have the same problems. The only way to fully remove all app data on iOS is to delete any iCloud backups, then factory reset your device, which is something nobody wants to do.

#7 - App Refunds Are a Convoluted MessGetting refunds for app purchases on Android is simple—as long as you're within the refund window, you just go back to the Play Store page where you bought the app and press "Refund"—similar to the way things work in the real world. But with iOS, the App Store itself doesn't provide an easy method for refunds, and instead, you have to visit a separate website and fill out a report, or dig through menus in the iTunes app for Mac or Windows—that's like going to the corporate Safeway office to get your money back for the spoiled milk you bought at the local Vons.Don't Miss: Get Refunds for Apps, Music, Movies, & More from Apple

#8 - You Can't Hide Apps from the Home ScreenEven if I hadn't grown accustomed to Android first, I'd probably still be annoyed by the inability to hide icons from the home screen on iOS. I like a clean home screen free of distractions, but even without regarding personal preference, the simple fact that you can't remove certain apps or their icons would frustrate just about anyone.True, there are workarounds that exploit bugs to hide apps on iOS, but none persist through a reboot. As it stands, I can't shake this feeling that the iPhone's home screen is just one giant app drawer.Don't Miss: The Trick to Hiding App Icons on Your iOS Home ScreenNote that in iOS 10, Apple has addressed this issue by allowing you to remove most apps from your home screen, excluding apps such as Photos, Settings, App Store, Messages, etc.

#9 - One Button Does 5 ThingsPossibly even more annoying than the single-button mouse Apple uses with its iMacs is the lone human interface button on iOS.The "Home" button on iPhones is all over the place, to the point where it can easily lead to confusion. A short press takes you home, a long press opens Siri, a double press takes you to your recent apps, a triple press triggers accessibility shortcuts (if enabled), and a double touch shrinks your screen for Reachability (which is very easy to accidentally trigger)—that's quite a lot to ask of one lonely little button. Now you may see this as a personal preference, which I suppose it is. But for every person clamoring about "iOS is easier to use than Android," what exactly is easy about having to memorize five different gestures to perform basic tasks? Compare that to Android's back-home-recents trio of buttons, and—actually, don't bother comparing, it's obvious which implementation is more user-friendly. Apparently, I'm pretty passionate about my buttons, because I can't bring myself to stop there. One final issue I'd like to address here is more of a hardware thing—the physical button on iPhones actually has to be clicked. Most Android phones, on the other hand, have on-screen buttons that are tapped, just like the rest of the interface. Think about it—you want to open an app, you tap the icon. You want to go back, you tap a button. Tap, tap, tap away, but when you want to go home or perform any of these other gestures? CLICK. It's a terribly inconsistent experience.

#10 - There's Only One Rendering Engine (Safari)Apple uses something called UIWebView to render webpages in Safari. It's nice, it's fast, and it's all you really need in a browser—unless, of course, you want something else. The problem here is that even third-party web browsers like Google Chrome have to use this UIWebView to render content on iOS. This means that even if you install your own browser, you hardly get any of the benefits, because you're really just using Safari with a different interface. Like I said at the beginning, I'm an Android user, so of course I'm carrying some bias here. Nonetheless, I tried my best to look at both operating systems objectively before writing this article, and now that I'm done—I'm still an Android user first.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+
